As we grow older our lips begin to thin, flatten and turn in.  The usual solution for this is to inject a product into the lips to fill them out. This is called a lip augmentation or enhancement. The most common product used for lip enhancement at Nouveau Medispa is a hyaluronic acid filler, like Restylane.

While this procedure can provide excellent results, many people wonder what “filler” is really made of. Some may shy away from this treatment because they have heard, or assume, that fillers contain “unnatural” materials that may give an unnatural appearance.

On the contrary, Restylane and Perlane fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance which is already present in your body. “HA” is essentially a carbohydrate, found in areas like the joints, lips, skin, and the scalp. Its function in the body is, amongst other things, to bind water and to lubricate movable parts of the body, such as joints and muscles. Though hyaluronic acid can be found naturally in most every cell in the body, almost 50% of the body’s HA is found in the skin.

Young skin is smooth, plump, and elastic because it contains large amounts of HA. The HA provides continuous moisture to the skin by binding up to1000 times its weight in water. However, as we age, our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid, and our skin and joints pay the price. There is less cushioning for our joints. Our skin is less supple and moist, and begins to show dryness, wrinkling and sagging. Our lips becomes thinner and flatter.

Lip enlargement or augmentation with a hyaluronic acid filler can provide more fullness and improved shape for patients who have thin lips,  or in patients who have lost lip volume from the aging process.
