Types of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, all of which are customized to the patient. There are two types of breast implants: saline (filled with a saltwater solution) and silicone (containing a cohesive gel).
Silicone implants are available for breast augmentation patients over the age of 22. They are composed of a thin silicone outer shell filled with a thick cohesive gel, which provides for a slightly more natural appearance and feel. While silicone implants are often a better choice for very thin women and those with very little breast tissue, they can be used for everyone. Our practice utilizes both Mentor® MemoryGel® and Natrelle® silicone implants.
Saline implants are available for use in breast augmentation patients over the age of 18. These are filled with a saline (salt water) solution. Saline implants are filled once they are inserted under the tissue, and thus are often placed through a smaller incision. This process also represents a slight cost savings benefit to the patient.
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
A good candidate for a breast augmentation procedure is someone who desires fuller breasts, either because they never achieved that fullness during puberty or because they wish to restore it after pregnancy and breastfeeding. During your personalized consultation, your board-certified plastic surgeon will evaluate your unique goals and select the appropriate implant to help you achieve your desired outcome.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
This surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The actual procedure will last 1-2 hours, with a total time away from home of 4-6 hours.
During the surgery, incisions are made either in the fold under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. Your consultation details and your specific aesthetic plan will dictate the scar location. The implant is then placed either directly behind the breast tissue or partially covered with the pectoralis or chest muscle.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation
Following a breast enhancement, you are expected to have some bruising and swelling along with mild pain and discomfort, which will be managed with medication. A surgical bra is worn continuously for the initial recovery period.
Your surgeon may use a pain pump for the first few days to provide better pain relief. At your initial postoperative visit, the bra and dressings are changed, and the pump is removed. At this time, you can begin to shower. By this point (2-3 days after surgery), most women are back to light activities and can return to work by days 3-7. Strenuous activity and exercise are restricted for approximately one month to allow the healing process to occur.
When Will I See My Results?
The results are immediate, with noted improvement, although swelling may initially make the breasts appear slightly larger than requested for a brief period. After a few weeks, you should experience a soft, smooth, and natural enhancement with great fullness and shape.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often do implants need to be replaced?
Many women worry that breast implants need frequent replacement or lifting, but they generally last longer than expected — often around 10-20 years without issue. While it’s possible that one or two follow-up surgeries may be needed over a lifetime, most women enjoy long-lasting results. Recent FDA reports suggest that about 20% of women may need implant repairs or replacements within 10 years, but most implants last much longer.
Can a breast augmentation be combined with a breast lift?
A breast lift can be effectively combined with a breast augmentation to achieve enhanced fullness while also addressing sagging or drooping. By lifting and augmenting the breasts in a single surgery, patients can obtain a more youthful, balanced, and aesthetically pleasing result while only needing to undergo a single recovery period.
Do you offer financing?
While we don’t offer in-house financing, we accept CareCredit® for qualifying applicants. CareCredit® offers flexible payment plans, like 6 months with no interest or extended pay options of 24 and 36 months at 14.9% interest. We also accept most major credit cards.
