Are you suffering from gynecomastia? Now you have done everything right…. you’ve watched your diet, worked out, lost weight and your body looks great except for your chest. At Advanced Surgery Center, we have performed numerous gynecomastia procedures in Newark for men who are in need of male breast reduction.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia, often referred to as male breasts or even man boobs is a common occurrence with well over half of all teens experiencing this during puberty. For many, it resolves but for some, it persists. Since this is a medical issue of overdevelopment of the breast, no matter what you do, they are still there.

Diagnosing Gynecomastia

An evaluation with your doctor can ensure there is nothing more going on but for most it is just bad luck. Fortunately, cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Chang, at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center & Nouveau Cosmetic Center has expertise in treating this condition right here in Newark and Wilmington Delaware to get you ready for a summer at the pool, on the Chesapeake Bay, or at the beach in Lewes, Rehoboth or Ocean City.

Highlights:

  • Extent of breast development identified
  • Liposuction or small scar resection with liposuction
  • General Anesthesia
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Modest bruising and downtime
  • 3-7 days off work
  • Garment/tight vest worn under clothes for 1 month
  • Full activity/sports at 1 month

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

There are several different options that we offer for male breast reduction in Newark. A careful history and examination will develop the best plan of surgical treatment for you to maximize results and minimize scarring. Options for gynecomastia surgery include:

Liposuction…

For many men, liposuction alone will provide an adequate reduction and treatment of the excess breast tissue. This is performed under anesthesia with a few very small incisions used to gain access with the liposuction cannula. Following the removal of the breast tissue, the skin will snap back into position leaving you smooth and tight without the excess breast. The small incisions are sutured closed and a garment is applied to provide pressure to the area. Liposuction alone is not the ideal choice for men with breasts skin that has become loose and saggy.

Minimal Incision…

Others have greater development and require a more aggressive surgical approach. By making an incision along the border of the areola, we usually can leave a scar that goes 1/2 way around from the 3-6-9 o’clock positions. This incision allows direct resection of the excess breast tissue mound. The surrounding areas are also treated with a bit of liposuction to smooth the edges and give you the best shape to your chest. The incisions are closed and a pressure bandage/garment is applied. This similarly uses anesthesia and has the same recovery.

Large Excision…

While the above 2 approaches work for most, some men have very large chest development and others who may have lost significant amounts of weight may have a significant amount of excess skin. While the scars are a bit longer, the premise is the same, remove the excess breast tissue and skin and provide a shapely, manly chest. In these instances, it is often necessary to remove the nipple and use it as a graft (free nipple graft). In these scenarios, the nipple, which is hanging low, is removed as well as the excess tissue. The nipple is then replaced at the appropriate position on the chest. The biggest difference is loss of sensation and feeling to the nipple, but it remains the best and often only way to shape your chest when you have significant excess skin.

I am a 32 year old male who has struggled with my weight ever since I was a child. I have gynecomastia that affects my self-confidence. Dr. Chang performed breast reduction on me, and I could not be happier with the results. I feel much better about myself and am very happy for getting the surgery.

Gynecomastia Recovery

After your gynecomastia surgery in Newark, a compression garment is worn to control swelling and compress the skin. These garments are worn throughout the healing process, which can last from days to months. Most patients are able to move freely without discomfort and can return to work in less than a week. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness are to be expected. Medication can help to minimize pain and discomfort.

The improved chest contour from liposuction and or resection will be apparent initially and will continue to improve as the swelling subsides and the skin tightens secondary to the healing process. The final optimal result will be apparent in a few months, but significant changes are usually seen day 1.

Full activity, sports, and exercise without restrictions, is begun at 1 month postoperatively.
