Liposuction, which is commonly referred to as “lipo,” targets this excess fat to improve body contour and make women look and feel great both in and out of clothes. This not only improves aesthetic appearance, but also may improve self-confidence.

Liposuction can be performed on a number of body areas, including the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, love handles (flanks), arms, back, face, chin, and neck. Liposuction can also be performed to treat gynecomastia, or swollen breast tissue in men.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center & Nouveau Cosmetic Center in Newark, Delaware can help you eliminate these stubborn fat pockets from virtually any area of the body with liposuction procedures.

Liposuction Highlights

  • Personalized consultation to identify problem areas
  • Small areas can be treated in the office under local anesthesia
  • Most done in operating room under general anesthesia
  • Bruising expected, with noticeable improvement day 1
  • Continued improvement as swelling resolves over next 3 months
  • Surgical garment worn for 4 weeks
  • Moderate discomfort for few days, ideally 4-7 days off work
  • 4 weeks till full exercise

The Procedure

During liposuction, tiny incisions are made in the abdomen. A sterile liquid solution is infused into the fatty tissue to reduce bleeding and trauma, followed by removal of the fat with an instrument called a “cannula.”

Liposuction surgery can be performed on either an outpatient or inpatient basis with general anesthesia, and may take one to three hours depending on the amount of fat removed.

At times, optimal results will require not only fat removal, but also skin removal and muscle tightening, especially after children. These women are candidates for a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty or “mommy makeover.” Consultation with your surgeon will determine the best procedure for each individual.

Liposuction Recovery

After the procedure, a compression garment is worn to control swelling and compress the skin. These garments are worn throughout the healing process, which can last from days to months. Most patients are able to move freely without discomfort and can return to work in less than a week.

The improved body contour from liposuction will be apparent initially and will continue to improve as the swelling subsides and the skin tightens during the healing process. The final result will be apparent in a few months.

Through continued healthy living, with an appropriate diet and adequate amount of exercise, the new body contour and enhanced self-image will be enjoyed for years to come.

Cost of Liposuction

The cost of this procedure depends on a few different variables, like the amount of time the surgery takes, how much fat is removed, the technique used during the procedure, and other factors. If you have any questions about this procedure, be sure to ask during your personalized consultation.
