Before Breast Reduction Surgery

There are several techniques used for breast reduction surgery that patients need to consider. Patients who wish to undergo breast reduction surgery at our Newark, Delaware practice will meet with one of our plastic surgeons for an initial consultation. During the consultation, patients will discuss their goals and expectations for breast reduction surgery with the surgeon. Your surgeon will then suggest the most suitable breast reduction surgery technique based on that information. Because of the health implications, breast reduction surgery is often covered by your health insurance carrier after their review. Contact our practice to find out if your health insurance plan will cover breast reduction surgery.

Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery is usually performed through incisions on your breasts with surgical removal of the excess fat, tissue and skin. The technique used to reduce the size of your breasts will be determined by your individual condition, breast composition, amount of reduction desired, and the surgeon’s advice.

The most common incision options include:

  • A circular pattern around the areola
  • A keyhole or lollipop pattern with an incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
  • An inverted T or anchor-shaped incision pattern

After the incision is made, the nipple (which remains tethered to its original blood and nerve supply) is then repositioned. Underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted and shaped. Occasionally, for extremely large pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast (free nipple graft).

Recovery

After breast reduction surgery, patients are wrapped in surgical dressings, which will need to be changed in 1-2 days. A special surgical bra will need to be worn for a few weeks after the procedure. Patients should expect some bruising and swelling after surgery, which should disappear after a few weeks. Patients are usually able to return to their normal daily activities 7-10 days after breast reduction surgery, but should refrain from any strenuous activity for several weeks or as instructed by their surgeon. Breast reduction scars may appear red and lumpy after surgery, but will fade over time.
