What is BOTOX?
Botox is the most common word we hear at Nouveau Cosmetic Center. It seems everyone comes in looking for Botox to fix the wrinkles in their face, sometimes even their body. It’s a word everyone has heard and many people have preconceived notions about. So let’s clear things up.
BOTOX contains a purified protein which is derived from living organism and 2 inactive ingredients, so therefore considered to be a biologic product.
OK what’s that mean to me you ask? It’s an FDA regulated medication (aka SAFE) administered through small injections into muscles to decrease the strength of that muscle temporarily (3-4 months). In higher doses it can weaken the muscle so much it can barely move (the Frozen look), but generally used in modest dosages to decrease the muscle activity to smooth wrinkles on the face.
This treatment is not a surgery, but it does improve moderate to severe frown lines between brows, forehead, and crow‘s feet. Wrinkles or lines which are dynamic (meaning they happen when you animate by smiling, frowning, getting angry, squinting) are dramatically improved by this treatment.
What it’s not is a filler or volumizing agent to take deep lines that are always present, even at rest and smooth them out. “Fillers” which provide volume such as restylane, perlane, juvederm, sculptra, radiesse, belotero, collagen, and fat are not Botox, but are often used to complement it. By filling deep folds and preventing the muscles from enhancing the others often leads to a smoother more youthful result.
Have you heard of Dysport as well, this is a competitor to botox that essentially does the same thing but from a different vendor. Think Coke and Pepsi; similar products, subtle differences; but both achieve the same results.
Why do I get 1’s?
Years of squinting, concentration, or frowning can cause your skin to furrow or crease. As time passes, the skin becomes less elastic and those frown lines between your brows, forehead, and crow’s feet remain, even when your facial muscles are relaxed.
