Before Breast Lift Surgery

There are multiple types of scars and procedures to distinctly treat each and every type of breast and person. At your personalized consultation, we will go over some of the main types of procedures and determine which one is right for you. Not every patient will be able to achieve the results they desire from each procedure, but rest assured our board certified plastic surgeons will be able to help you find the result you need and employ the best technique to achieve that goal.

Peri-areolar mastopexy

In this type of procedure, the scar remains on the upper ½ to 2/3 of the junction between with the darker pigmented area (areola) and the lighter breast skin. This can help a for a mild lift and limits scars to a natural break that often, when visualized in the future, are well hidden.

Circum-areolar mastopexy or doughnut mastopexy

In this procedure, the incision goes completely around the areolar area again at the junction between the darker pigmented circle (areola) and the lighter breast skin. This allows a larger lift but still keeps the scar in that natural break point which can often hide the scar very well.

Vertical mastopexy or lollipop mastopexy

This procedure combines the circum-areolar approach with a vertical extension going directly from the nipple areolar complex towards the fold at the bottom of the breast. This scar ends just before the fold so that a bra or bathing suit will fully hide the scar. This is commonly referred to as the lollipop technique as the scar mimics that. This provides yet a stronger tool for lifting and tightening the breast, while still limiting the scarring.

Wise pattern mastopexy or anchor mastopexy

This procedure provides for the most lifting and tightening power, where a significant amount of skin is removed with an extension along the inframammary fold. The resulting incisions resemble an anchor, hence the name. This allows the greatest amount of tightening and lift, and still keeps the scars on the breast hidden in bras and bathing suit tops.

Recovery

After breast lift surgery, patients are fitted with a special bra to provide support and hold the breasts in place. Patients can usually return home a few hours after breast lift surgery. Although patients should expect to experience pain, swelling, and bruising for 2-3 weeks after breast lift surgery, many patients find they are able to return to their daily activities within 7-10 days. Scars will be visible after surgery, but will fade over time.
