Breast Implants
Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to choose from. There are two types of breast implants: saline (filled with a salt water solution) and silicone (filled with a cohesive gel). Both types of implants have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Silicone implants are available for use in breast augmentation patients over the age of 22. The implants are comprised of a thin silicone outer shell filled with a thick cohesive gel; which provides for a slightly more natural appearance and feel. While these are often a better choice for very thin women, and those with very little breast tisssue, they can be used for everyone. We use Mentor Memory Gel and Natrelle implants.
Saline implants are available for use in breast augmentation patients over the age of 18. The implants are comprised of a thin silicone outer shell filled with Saline (salt water) solution. This is a great choice for many women as they are filled once inserted and can therefore often be placed through a smaller incision. Additionally they do provide a cost savings to the patient as well. All of our patients receive custom implant sizing to address their specific concerns and ensure the beautiful natural results are achieved.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The actual procedure will last from 1- 2 hours, with a total time away from home of 4-6 hours. During the surgery incisions are made either in the fold under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. The choice of location of the scar will be dictated by your consultation and your specific desires. Additiionally the implant is placed either directly behind the breast tissue, or will be partially covered with the pectoralis or chest muscle. The results are immediate, with noted enhancement. Initial swelling and mild bruising is common as well as a ‘tightness’ to the breast that softens during the initial healing process leading to a soft, smooth and natural enhancement with great fullness and shape.

Breast Augmentation Recovery
Following a breast enhancement you are expected to have some bruising and swelling along with mild pain and discomfort managed with medication. A bra is worn continuously for the initial period. For better pain relief our surgeons use a pain pump for the first few days. At your initial visit the bra and dressings are changed and the pump is removed and you can begin to shower.
Normally by this point at 2-3 days most women are back to light activity and can return to work by days 3-7. Strenous activity and exercise is restricted for approximately 1 month to allow the healing process to occur.
