Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation at our Newark, Delaware practice near Elkton, Maryland is a popular procedure for women who would like to enhance their natural breast size and shape. The procedure involves adding fullness and shape to the breast by placing saline or silicone breast implants either under the chest muscle or behind breast tissue. The result is a more appealing body contour. Breast augmentation surgery may be performed on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. The procedure lasts for approximately two hours.

Types of Breast Implants

Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to choose from. There are two types of breast implants: saline (filled with a salt water solution) and silicone (filled with a cohesive gel). Both types of implants have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Patients who decide to undergo breast augmentation surgery will need to decide what type of breast implant is most suited for their cosmetic goals. Patients will meet with one of our plastic surgeons before breast augmentation surgery to discuss their goals and the desired shape and size of the implants, taking into account their body types and lifestyles. The surgeon will evaluate the patient's existing breast tissue to help determine the appropriate implant to accommodate the desired result. All of our patients receive custom implant sizing to address their specific concerns.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

After breast augmentation surgery, it is very important that patients follow their surgeon's instructions. Patients will be drowsy and sore, and they might experience swelling and bruising for the next few days after breast augmentation surgery. Patients are usually able to resume regular daily activities in five-to-six days. More strenuous activity, such as rigorous exercise, can usually be resumed in a month.

Breast Lift

Aging, as well as weight gain/loss and pregnancy, can cause the skin of the breasts to lose elasticity and sag. Breast lift surgery at our practice near Wilmington, Delaware can be an effective solution. The breast lift procedure removes excess skin and safely lifts the breasts to a higher position, restoring firmness and shape. The result is more youthful-looking breasts. Breast lift surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia, and usually takes a few hours.

Before Breast Lift Surgery

There are different breast lift surgery techniques available to help patients reach their cosmetic goals. Patients who are interested in breast lift surgery will meet with one of our surgeons for an initial consultation to explore their surgical options. Together, the surgeon and patient will determine which technique will help them achieve the look they desire. Each technique varies in the shape of incisions used and the appearance of their resulting scars. In addition to a breast lift, our surgeons may recommend breast augmentation or breast reduction to further enhance the effects of the mastopexy. Our surgeons will also make sure patients maintain reasonable expectations for breast lift surgery results.

Breast Lift Recovery

After breast lift surgery, patients are fitted with a special bra to provide support and hold the breasts in place. Patients can usually return home a few hours after breast lift surgery. Although patients should expect to experience pain, swelling, and bruising for two-to-three weeks after breast lift surgery, many patients find they are able to return to their daily activities within seven-to-ten days. Scars will be visible after surgery, but will fade over time. To schedule an appointment for breast lift surgery, contact our Newark practice serving Wilmington, Delaware and surrounding areas.

Women who have very large breasts may find themselves experiencing back or neck pain as well as a skin irritation, and may find it difficult to perform the daily activities that others take for granted. Breast reduction surgery at Advanced Plastic Surgery in Newark, Delaware can help eliminate these problems as well as provide cosmetic improvements. Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts as well as contouring and shaping them for a smaller, firmer appearance. Breast reduction surgery lasts approximately three-to-five hours, and is performed under general anesthesia.

Before Breast Reduction Surgery

There are several techniques used for breast reduction surgery that patients need to consider. Patients who wish to undergo breast reduction surgery at our Newark, Delaware practice will meet with one of our plastic surgeons for an initial consultation. During the consultation, patients will discuss their goals and expectations for breast reduction surgery with the surgeon. The surgeon will then suggest the most suitable breast reduction surgery technique based on that information. Breast Reduction Recovery

After breast reduction surgery, patients are wrapped in surgical dressings, which will need to be changed in one-to-two days. A special surgical bra will need to be worn for a few weeks after the procedure. Patients should expect some bruising and swelling after surgery, which should disappear after a few weeks. Patients are usually able to return to their normal daily activities seven-to-ten days after breast reduction surgery, but should refrain from any strenuous activity for several weeks or as instructed by their surgeon. Breast reduction scars may appear red and lumpy after surgery, but will fade over time. Contact our practice to schedule an initial consultation for breast reduction surgery.

Breast Reconstruction

Women who have had a mastectomy are often good candidates for breast reconstruction surgery. This surgery may be performed at the same time as the mastectomy, or as a separate surgery. Before breast reconstruction, patients meet with their plastic surgeon to discuss their cosmetic goals. At the Advanced Plastic Surgery Center, we use the latest technology and surgical techniques for breast reconstruction with natural-looking results.

Breast Reconstruction Options

There are two different options for breast reconstruction offered at our Newark practice. One procedure uses the patient's skin, or a "flap," to create the new breast. The flap is formed from skin that is taken from the abdomen or back. The second option involves solely skin expansion rather than a flap. A balloon expander is inserted and gradually expanded until the permanent breast implant can be inserted.

Breast reconstruction surgery at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center is performed in partnership with the patient's oncology surgeon. A two-to-five day hospital stay is usually necessary after breast reconstruction surgery. As with breast augmentation, lift, and reduction, breast reconstruction surgery improves the appearance and symmetry of the breasts, and also tends to positively affect a patient's self-esteem and quality of life.
